Taking place between the events of A Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem, A Plague Tale: Tenebris is a novel which follows Amicia and Hugo, along with their mother Béatrice and friend Lucas, facing new opponents.
1348. A few days after their battle against Grand Inquisitor Vitalis, Amicia and Hugo hear that they are being chased. They fly East to run away from the weakened English troops and the grudge of the Inquisition, but a group of Flagellants runs secretly after them. Headed by a zealous, they are determined to use Hugo in their procession, to represent the Christ’s martyrdom, “spreading sacred blood from his wounds over the sinful Humanity”. The journey is soon disturbed by the Macula, which awakens and inflicts terrible headaches and nightmares upon Hugo. Béatrice and Lucas affirm without a doubt that Hugo’s nightmares alter the world that surrounds him: contagious emotions, confusion of the senses, hallucinations, panicked rats which escape the young boy’s call.
